October once again brought one of the most anticipated events in the Teikyo Durham calendar: the annual Teikyo Festival. Held on 18 October, this year’s event enjoyed mild weather and a lively atmosphere, making it a great day to share Japanese culture with the local community.
We were pleased to welcome a wide range of visitors, including local residents, families, Durham University students and a nearby scout group. We were also honoured by a visit from The Right Worshipful, The Mayor of Durham, Councillor Gary Hutchinson, who spent time speaking with our students and exploring the different activities.

Throughout our building, Teikyo students hosted a variety of cultural experiences. Visitors could try origami and calligraphy, learn some basic Japanese, and have a go at wearing a yukata, which was once again one of the most popular attractions. The green tea demonstration also drew lots of interest and gave guests a closer look at this important aspect of Japanese tradition.

A new addition to this year’s festival was a display of Japanese replica food, similar to the models often seen in restaurant windows in Japan. These detailed and colourful replicas were a real talking point and helped introduce another side of everyday life in Japan.

The programme also included impressive kobudo and aikido demonstrations from local martial arts groups, giving visitors the chance to see traditional Japanese martial arts in action and adding plenty of excitement to the day.

No festival would be complete without food, and our students prepared freshly cooked yakisoba, which proved very popular with guests.

This year students put a great deal of effort into preparing for the festival, and their enthusiasm and teamwork were clear throughout the day.
The Teikyo Festival remains one of the highlights of the year – a celebration of culture, community and the hard work of our students.
