The Alliance Programme (9th February – 23rd February)

Our first short course welcomed seventeen students from three universities in Japan as part of the Alliance Programme.  To help students settle in, we organised a campus and city tour, giving them the chance to familiarise themselves with their surroundings and appreciate the beauty of Durham.

The students stopped at the Bill Bryson Library as part of the City Campus Tour.

Cultural Visits

The group travelled by train to Edinburgh with staff member Michael, where they spent the day exploring Scotland’s historic capital. From its striking architecture to its vibrant atmosphere, the visit was a highlight for many.  Despite the rain, the students said they had a wonderful time.

On another day, students visited York. There, they explored the magnificent York Minster and immersed themselves in the rich history and lively charm of this beautiful city.

Academic Learning and Guest Lectures

Throughout their stay, students took part in a wide range of structured lessons, discussions, presentations, and guest lectures. One of the highlights was a guest lecture delivered by the Executive Officer of Kasai Kogyo and Chairperson of Kasai UK, Mr Yuki Miyauchi. The lecture gave students the opportunity to learn how international collaboration and innovation can drive success in a global environment. We were delighted that the students were able to benefit from this valuable experience.

Experiences Beyond the Classroom

In addition to their academic studies and travel, students had the opportunity to take part in a range of other activities, including a Tea Ceremony and a Japanese Culture Exchange. They also enjoyed going bowling and spending an evening at the cinema.

While some of these activities can also be enjoyed in Japan, experiencing them in the UK gave students the chance to relax and have fun while practising their English-speaking skills in a UK environment.

Last Day in Durham

On their final day in Durham, students continued developing their communication and presentation skills. They attended a book club led by our librarian, Miki, and enjoyed a lecture delivered by a guest speaker, Dr. Alice Baldock.

The programme concluded with a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Students and staff shared a delicious meal while reflecting on their experiences in the UK. During the evening, each student was presented with a certificate in recognition of their hard work and participation.

Final Stop - London

Before returning to Japan, the group travelled to London with staff members Jacob and Junko. They visited the world-famous British Museum, then enjoyed the rest of the day as free time in the capital. Each student chose how to spend their time—some visited iconic landmarks, others explored shopping areas, and a few even toured a nearby football stadium.

A Lasting Impact

The Alliance Programme provided students with valuable opportunities to develop their English language skills and build confidence in communication. More importantly, they gained first-hand experience of British culture and a meaningful insight into university life in the UK.

It has been a pleasure to welcome the students to Durham, and we hope the memories and skills they gained during their time here will stay with them for years to come.
