2023 at Teikyo University Japan in Durham began with our remaining main course students returning from Language Schools across the UK. It was exciting to hear about what they had been up to over the Christmas break, and to see how they had learnt more about English culture through living with their host families!

There wasn’t much time to lose, however, with exams around the corner. Revision classes began, but not without some final fun trips and activities planned to make the most of the last few weeks students had in the UK.

Our students loved seeing Pam, Dash and Monty one last time. Dash and Monty were very good at giving hugs and were very clever at doing some tricks like ‘sit’ and ‘spin’ (especially when food was involved).

In the midst of revision, Conrad led a chilly yet scenic daytrip to the beach at Tynemouth. It was lovely to have free time to explore the coast of the Northeast, eat some tasty fish and chips, and in true British style come home early because of the weather!

Exams started the following week and students took them in their stride. To balance out the exam timetable, Grace led another daytrip, this time to the historic town of York. We travelled by mini-bus and students enjoyed a lot of free time wandering through and exploring the city. There were plenty of fun shops and streets to discover, and many loved walking down ‘The Shambles’: narrow streets that inspired Diagon Alley in Harry Potter.

Finally, it was time to say goodbye! To celebrate their time in Durham, we had a farewell dinner for our students at Finbarr’s restaurant in Durham. It was wonderful to have guests join us in the celebrations, as a thank you for how they have really helped our students settle into Durham and make the most of their time here.

Bursar and Principal both gave speeches, congratulating students on their academic achievements and integration into Durham university life. Each student was given a certificate in recognition of their successful completion of the academic course. It was also a joy to recognise three particular students’ success and involvement during their time here. Mr Rei Kawanaka (Van Mildert) was awarded the Durham University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Academic Achievement, and Mr Ryuichi Kuriyama (Van Mildert) and Mr Toshiki Fukuhara (St Mary’s) were both awarded the Contribution to TUID Award. Well done to everyone!

While it was sad to say goodbye to the last of the Autumn 2022/23 students, we wish you every success in the future and hope to see you again soon!
