The beginning of the new academic year has been full of energy, creativity, and connection for our Teikyo students. From sports and crafts to day trips and community engagement, everyone has enjoyed a wide variety of activities both on and off campus.
One of the most heart-warming moments this term was meeting Dash, the therapy dog. Students love having the chance to spend time with this friendly and gentle Bedlington terrier.

One weekend mid-September, students took part in a cultural day trip to the historic city of York. They visited York Minster, explored the Shambles, and learned about the city’s fascinating past in York’s many museums. Three weeks into their time here in England, students have already explored the charming cities of Cambridge, Durham, Newcastle and York. Where will they visit next?

Freshers’ Week was an action-packed week, full of fun events the students could participate in to make new friends and feel part of the Durham University community. Fairground rides, petting zoos, movie nights, silent discos, formal dinners, club nights and much more were available for students to enjoy within their colleges.

During this week our students joined the Freshers’ Fair at Maiden Castle Sports Centre, where they met members of Durham University’s many clubs and societies. From sports to volunteering, there was something for everyone. Students were able to discover and join a vast number of sports teams and societies that will allow them to make social connections during their time here in Durham. In addition to this, students got involved in other fun activities such as getting a free hair cut, getting interviewed, and winning prizes.

Near the end of Freshers’ Week, in Collingwood College, Teikyo students organised an origami freshers event. This was a fantastic opportunity for cultural exchange between Teikyo and Durham University students. Our students helped to provide support to those who wanted to try origami for the first time, which created a fun, friendly and collaborative atmosphere.

After Freshers’ Week, a group of ten Teikyo students visited Oakley Cross Primary School to meet local children to teach them about various aspects of Japanese culture. They assisted with activities that taught Japanese words and phrases, origami techniques, how to wear Yukatas, chopstick technique and the art of calligraphy. Both the students and the children enjoyed the cultural exchange, and it was a memorable day for all involved.

A creative pottery workshop was another creative outlet for students. They were able to learn about the process of pottery making, while having fun designing their own decorative pottery.
