How to find us

The map above can be used to find directions to find the Lafcadio Hearn Cultural Centre

The general information below is provided as a reference only, and its accuracy cannot be guaranteed. You should check with your transport provider to ensure you book the correct tickets and are able to make any connections.

By Foot

We are approximately 30 minutes on foot from the railway and bus stations, 20 minutes from the Cathedral and Castle, and 10 minutes from the University Library.

Walking up South Road, continue past the Science Site, St Mary’s College and Grey College. As the hill flattens out at the top, turn right just past the pedestrian crossing into Elvet Hill Road. Before the road bears to the right, turn left into Mill Hill Lane (signposted for the Oriental Museum). Continue up the hill and take the first right towards the Oriental Museum. We are located on the left.

By Rail

Durham has a busy mainline railway station, with direct services to/from London (3 hours), Edinburgh (2 hours), Newcastle (15 minutes), Manchester (2½ hours), York (50 minutes), Birmingham (3 hours) and many other destinations across the country.

We are within a 30 minute walk of Durham Railway Station – use the map above to find directions. It is usually (but not always) possible to get a taxi at the station without pre-booking.

By Sea

DFDS Seaways operates an overnight car and foot-passenger ferry service between Amsterdam and North Shields (Newcastle). The ferry terminal is connected to Newcastle Central Station by a dedicated DFDS bus service.

By Road

Durham is located about 20 miles from Newcastle, 120 miles from Edinburgh and 270 miles from London by road. We are about 3½ miles from the A1(M) motorway.

Driving from the south, leave the A1(M) at Junction 61 and follow the A177 towards Bowburn then Durham for about 4 miles. At the roundabout take the first exit and continue on the A177 towards the City Centre for ¼ mile. At the traffic lights turn left, following signs for the Oriental Museum. After ½ mile, when the hill levels out, turn right, then take the first left turn (still following signs for the Oriental Museum) then the first right. We are located on the left.

Driving from the north, leave the A1(M) at Junction 62 and follow the A690 towards Durham for about 2 miles. At the roundabout, take the third exit towards City Centre. Turn left (first exit, using the slip-road) at the next roundabout towards Coxhoe/Bowburn (A177). At the first set of traffic lights continue straight on. The second set of traffic lights is a pedestrian crossing. At the third set of traffic lights, the road forks – take the right fork towards Darlington/Bowburn/Coxhow (A177) along Church Street. At the fourth set of traffic lights (crossroads with the New Inn on the corner), continue straight on. After ½ mile, when the hill levels out, turn right, then take the first left turn (still following signs for the Oriental Museum) then the first right. We are located on the left.

By Air

Durham’s nearest airport is Newcastle International, with flights from London Heathrow, Amsterdam, Paris, Dubai and elsewhere. The quickest and easiest way to travel between the airport and Durham is by taxi – a pre-booked taxi should cost between £30 and £40. Alternatively, take the Metro from Airport to Central Station, then a train from Newcastle Central to Durham. Car hire is also available at the airport.

Other airports with a train service to Durham include Manchester (approx. 2¾ hours) Edinburgh (approx. 2 hours) and the London airports (approx. 4½ hours including connections). Be aware that if you buy an “Advance” rail ticket and your flight is late, you will not be permitted on subsequent trains without paying for a more expensive ticket.

By Bus or Coach

We are within a 30 minute walk of Durham Bus Station – use the map above to find directions. Buses operate from around the city and region. More information can be found on the Durham County Council website. Two bus routes – 6 (Cockfield-Durham) and X21 (Bishop Auckland-Newcastle) – stop at “South Road Colleges”, which is a short (2 minute) walk from us.

National Express operates a direct coach service between London and Durham which takes between 6 and 8 hours, depending on the time of day. It stops at Durham Bus Station. Megabus operates a direct coach service between London and Edinburgh which stops at Newcastle – from Newcastle you can take the train or a bus to Durham.
